Turkoman weavers in northern Afghanistan have been weaving Khal Mohammadi rugs for generations, with the design popularized in the mid-20th century by the Afghan master whose name the rug carries. This one was hand knotted in Afghanistan in that tradition. The composition runs an all-over geometric pattern of small medallions and crosses across the field, drawn in dark navy and black against a saturated ground. The motifs repeat steadily without a dominant central medallion, which gives the rug its tapestry-like balance. Scalloped pendant guards sit above and below the field, framing it before the multiple narrow geometric borders take over. Wool pile on a cotton foundation gives the rug a low, dense hand.
