Strong graphic geometry on this Zanjan, with a deep black(Rich Chocolate Brown) field carrying a stepped pole medallion in saturated red that runs almost the full length of the rug. Inside the red medallion sits a smaller ivory cartouche dotted with tiny floral motifs, like a quiet patterned diamond at the heart of the composition. The wide red main border picks up a stylized boteh and cypress run in ivory and gold, framing the dark field cleanly. Zanjan is in northwestern Iran, between Tabriz and Tehran, and its weavers work in both Turkish and Persian knots depending on the village. Hand knotted from soft, durable wool.
