This Gholtough centres on a stepped concentric medallion in ivory and red, layered ring inside ring like a target, set on a deeply patterned field with an all-over Herati ground. A wide ivory main border filled with curling vinework and small palmettes frames the rug and gives the whole composition real definition. Gholtough is a village in Iran's Zanjan province, in a region whose weaving heritage runs close to the Bijar tradition, and these rugs are built on the same kind of dense, firm-handed weave. Hand knotted from natural wool at a low pile, the piece feels substantial underfoot. Less famous than its Bijar cousins, but built the same way, and the colour story is a touch softer, which makes it easier to land in lighter, transitional rooms.
